As you may know, our summer interns are contributing to Daily Fuel’s editorial. Today's guest blogger, Luke, an entrepreneurship student at the University of Michigan, discusses the importance of perseverance.

When Life Gives You Lessons

We’ve all heard the old saying, “Choose a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Unfortunately, the vast majority of workers don’t have a job they love, and those that do most likely went through years climbing the corporate ladder before acquiring their dream job. Finding the patience and persistence to reach your goals and get your dream job takes a lot of strength, and Cary Tilds knows this from experience. She became the Chief Innovation Officer of GroupM by always putting her energy towards improvement and creating value, regardless of her position.

Cary’s mentality was shared by one of the most inspirational CEO’s of our time, Ursula Burns. In 2009 Burns became the first ever black female CEO of a Fortune 500 company when she took over the position at Xerox. However, her Xerox journey started 29 years earlier as a summer intern who was eventually promoted to executive assistant. Working as an assistant was by no means her dream job, but she persevered, and put her energy towards finding solutions for the company. Her positive contributions were eventually noticed by high level executives and she received her first of many promotions. It took Ursula Burns almost 30 years to get where she wanted to be, but she achieved her goal because she refused to focus her energy on worrying about her imperfect position.

In this industry, there are only two ways up the ladder. Rung by rung or claw your way to the top. It's sure been tough on my nails.
